Meditation-lite 101
How often have we found ourselves daydreaming about that big summer getaway? City breaks can definitely be fun, but quite a hassle to plan and save for unless you happen to own a mine or drawing from a trust fund. What's more, many of us can't be that long away from our day jobs, or have nagging commitments to occupy us. Still, city breaks are a good way to have that much-needed breather from the old and the usual. There are other ways to get that change of pace though, without having to even get up from one's seat. Try meditation-lite! Here's a few steps to get you started:
– Close your eyes, but not all the way, let go of all tension in your body starting with your eyelids.
– It helps if you can get a spot away from clattering keyboards and chattering workmates, but if you can't , take a deep breathe and let it all fade out as background white noise.
– now that you're in a relatively quiet and darkened place, focus on your thoughts, and release them one by one. Keep your breathing at a constant pace, and you actually use them to “send off” your concerns one by one into that big cloud above you. Imagine your thoughts are like a bunch of balloons you need to let go of.
– as you can see, visualisation is the first step to relaxation. You need not resist whatever thoughts come your way, whether they make you happy or sad – just let them be, and find yourself floating with their flow, but at the same time free of them. Keep your alertness and sense of presence
– with practice, you'll be able to drift into that state of mind where you can be as you are and even find some new thing about your day. This technique will also refresh your mind and make you ready to take on whatever you need to do for this time.
– as a perspective exercise, this technique will also let you get back to problem solving and other demanding conceptual tasks for the rest of your work-day! Who knows, you might even get more ideas on where and how to spend your next city break.
